Board of Govenor’s Message
Maseno School is over 100 years old. It is perhaps the oldest public school in the whole country. The age of the buildings, the trees and some of the old boys bear testimony to this. The buildings made of bricks are now weather beaten; we have the oldest trees perhaps in the region standing in the school compound.
The oldest student of Maseno, if alive, would be a hundred and twenty or so. Thank God the occasion has been blessed by the presence of many of them. Prof. Wasawo who though not the oldest represent that age group. Amidst many constraints my tenure has seen the following:
1. Alleviation of congestion by building of an ultra-modern Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hostel, named after the Late Pioneer politician, also an old boy
2. Rehabilitation and building of teachers houses. The Board has built a 200 bed capacity modern house and rehabilitated 4 Houses.
3. Steady academic progress with good results at KCSE examinations. The number of University entrance has increased both in numbers and quality of the disciplines the students pursue.
4. In science congress, we were the 2003 and 2004 best public school in National students’ congress on science and technology.
5. In terms of co-curricula activities we won five awards in the production of the winning "wheels of vengeance" in 2004.
6. In extra-curricula activities, the school has won National, East Africa and Africa Basketball Championships. The Rugby team- the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Rugby sevens football Schools championship. The Hockey team of 2004, 2005 and 2006 were the Kings College, Budo, Hockey invitational Champions.
However, in the face of all these successes, the school faces serious challenges in the future. Most of the buildings in the school are 100 years or slightly less, and therefore stand condemned under the building By-Laws. They pose a danger to students not to mention staff. This is the time to map ways and means of arresting the impending disaster.
Against this backdrop, there is urgent need to raise funds not only for rehabilitation of buildings, which are rehabilitable but also for expansion of the school to meet the demands of the 21st century. In this regard, the priority projects identified are six (6) new dormitories and tuition blocks and administration blocks, modern library, and computer laboratory, expansion of the chapel, digging one more bore-hole, swimming pool and 3 generators to alleviate the plight of students during power rationing arising from perennial drought as witnessed in the recent past.
My board has ambitious plans, which require elaborate funding. But this does not weaken our resolve to chart up a course of steering this great school into the 21st century, a century dedicated to technological advancement in the context of globalization. This will be the only way Maseno School could overcome the challenges of the future. On the non-physical aspects, our priority project is the Bursary Endowment Fund to cater for school fees for bright boys who happen to lose their parents at early age. In this regard, my board launched Maseno School Endowment Fund on the 18th Day of Nov 2005. However, the fund was only boosted once by AIDS Orphan fund to the tune of Ksh. 180,000 which has since been disbursed to the needy students in the current year. I call upon all well wishers to chip in something in the spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood. In the midst of our achievements, we have been greatly assisted by several institutions and persons e.g.
1. The Ministry of Education and in particular the Teachers Service Commission. Presently, the number of teachers has increased from 36 to 45, though we still need more.
2. The parents for their solid support in paying school fees and funds towards various development activities
3. The old boys in initiating the Bursary Endowment Fund and making centenary celebrations a success.
4. The chief principal and his staff for their dedicated service to the school particularly in terms of restoring discipline, sound financial management and conducive learning and teaching environment.
5. The Board of Governors for their tacit support in all aspects of the school development.
Finally the students for the following things:
* Avoiding alcohol, drugs and loose morals
* For hard work which has manifested itself in the statistics read to us this afternoon
* Managing high standards of cleanliness
* Continuing the tradition of hard work and unrelentless zeal to excel
